Maltreatment in the first five years of life can have devastating consequences as a child grows into adolescence and adulthood. Because the early years lay the foundation for all development that follows, there is a tremendous danger for long-term irreversible damage. However, the plasticity of young children’s developing brains means that early intervention in cases of abuse, neglect, and other forms of maltreatment can provide the opportunity for a child to have a healthy, successful life outcome. To ensure that children are safe from maltreatment requires comprehensive community-based approaches to protecting and promoting the well-being of children and supporting and strengthening families. The following resources link to organizations, research, and policy recommendations designed to prevent and address abuse and neglect.
