Domestic Violence in the U.S.

  • 1 in every 4 women will experience domestic violence sometime in her lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women each year.
  • Children witnessing domestic violence between their parents or caretakers is the strongest risk factor for transmitting violent behavior from one generation to the next.
  • Boys who witness domestic violence are twice as likely to abuse their partners and children when they become adults.
  • 30% yo 60% of perpetrators of intimate partner violence also abuse the children in the household.

Child Abuse in America is a hidden epidemic.

  • 3 million reports are made each year in the U.S., but experts estimate that actual numbers of incidents of abuse and neglect are 3 times greater.
  • 4 children die everyday as a result of child abuse and 3 out of 4 of these victims is under the age of 4.
  • Child abuse occurs at every socioeconomic level, across ethnic and cultural lines, within all regions, and at all levels of education.
  • One third of abused children will later abuse their children, continuing the cycle.
