From the Director:
It is my pleasure to welcome you to Docs For Tots Washington State. Our mission is to build and support a network of doctors collaborating with others in advocacy for young children.
Every child deserves to be healthy and supported to reach his or her full potential. Research shows a vital connection between the relationships children have with caring adults and what happens inside their developing minds and bodies. There is clear evidence linking early childhood experiences with long-term outcomes. This message needs to be shared in meaningful ways so that our policies support practices which benefit children’s health and development. We know what is needed, but we have a long way to go!
At Docs For Tots we believe that physician involvement in policy and advocacy will greatly enhance efforts to promote child health and well being. We know that this is new to many doctors, so we provide support and connections to make it easier. We’ve shown that a busy doctor can provide a clinical context and add a compelling voice to efforts supporting young children. And, once we take that first leap of faith, we doctors often find the process an unexpectedly fun and rewarding experience!
My passion for early childhood has connected me with many dedicated individuals and organizations working on behalf of children in Washington State. With leadership from Governor Gregoire and the Gates Foundation, early learning and the needs of young children are in the spotlight. We have a tremendous opportunity in front of us, and the time is right for an increased presence for Docs For Tots. By involving more doctors in the rapidly changing world of early childhood, we will see an impact almost immediately. Docs For Tots Washington State is uniquely positioned to use its intimate knowledge of Washington's physician and advocacy networks to recognize opportunities, facilitate collaborations, and put advocacy in action.
Doctors, please join our network, and let us help you get involved. Advocacy groups, explore the website, and contact us with your requests. We have the opportunity, and the power, to make a real difference for children. Won’t you join us?
