DFTNY would like to meet your needs and collaborate to create a better world for New York's children.
Types of activities
Below is a list of activities we feel are a great way for doctors and advocacy groups to begin working together. Docs For Tots would assist both the doctor and organization by providing, and in some cases creating, specific materials (PowerPoint presentations, talking points, etc.) and providing individualized technical assistance.
- Invite doctors to present at conferences, meetings, community forums, etc. on social policy and child development topics.
- Facilitate roundtable discussions with child advocacy and child service organizations, staff and parents where doctors answer questions and talk about social policy and child development issues.
- Collaborate with doctors to write Op-Ed pieces, letters to the editor and meet with editorial boards.
- Use doctors as messengers in media campaigns.
- Compile doctor quotes for promoting your advocacy agenda.
- Invite doctors to write an article for your organization's newsletter or other publication.
- Assist and facilitate doctors in testifying at public and legislative hearings.
- Involve doctors in a voter registration activities such as collaborating with them to make available voter registration materials in their offices and facilitating registration.
- Conduct on-site advocacy training session(s) for doctors and create and/or dispense materials specific to your issues to doctors.
- Invite doctors for a tour of your program or organization.
Long-term/Ongoing doctor participation
It is our goal to not only serve as an entry point into the advocacy arena for our network doctors but to keep doctors involved in repeat and ongoing advocacy work through developing long-term relationships with advocacy groups. However, these latter types of relationships will, in many cases, need to be cultivated over time and generally will not be the initial commitment made by our network doctors. Some potential examples of this type of involvement would include:
- Doctor participation in a community planning process or agenda selection.
- Internships for doctors within advocacy organizations.
- Developing advocacy training programs with local hospital programs for doctors in training.
- Developing advocacy training programs with local medical schools.
- Board of Directors participation.
