The organization evolved into Kentucky Child NOW!, a statewide organization under which he serves as Chair of the Board of Directors.
Dr. Young has recently published an AAP Policy Statement with the Council on School Health entitled “Health Appraisal Guidelines for Day Camps and Resident Camps” in Pediatrics. He also spoke at a UKY medical student seminar on child health in Ecuador and led a team of pediatric residents in Ecuador, a volunteer activity that he has been involved in since 2002. Additionally, he gave a presentation about elementary school mental health at the National Assembly for School Based Health Care in Providence, RI.
In 2005, Dr. Young was awarded a 5-year grant Healthy Tomorrows Grant, which supports families in a pediatric health center, a 3-year HRSA Child Health Practitioner Support Grant with Kentucky Child NOW! and the Kentucky Pediatric Society, and a Kentucky Dept. of Health Grant to work on preventing elementary school obesity.
After medical school at the University of Louisville and a pediatric residency at Indiana University, Dr. Young completed a fellowship in Community Pediatrics and a master's degree in Public Health. As president of the Kentucky Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he worked with the legislature to maximize the health insurance coverage for uninsured children through KCHIP (Kentucky's Child Health Insurance Program). Having served as Chair of the KCIP Advisory Council he was able to successfully expand KCHIP and simplify the application and enrollment process. He currently serves as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at The University of Kentucky, Medical Director of Family Care Center Health Clinic, and Medical Director of Health Kids Centers.
